If you’re gearing up to compare BMW models, you’re well on your way to a more engaging daily drive. However, since every model in the lineup of X Series BMW SUV models has so much to offer the San Francisco area’s most adventurous drivers, you’re also going to have your work cut out for you. That’s where we come in! Explore our in-depth BMW X3 vs. X5 match-up below, and find the model that’s right for you at our San Mateo dealership.

BMW X3 vs. X5: Pricing and Value

The 2020 BMW X3 starts at $41,950 MSRP, while the 2020 BMW X5 starts at $58,900 MSRP. You shouldn’t be surprised to learn that the X5 has a little more to offer drivers near Redwood City and Burlingame, but not every aspect of this match-up will be as straightforward as you might expect. Here’s what you should know about the feature suites of both models:

  • Both models come standard with leatherette (SensaTec®) seating, along with voice-activated navigation.
  • The base-model X5 includes a 10-speaker audio system as standard. The X3 actually includes a 12-speaker audio system for an even more engaging entertainment experience. Both are available with premium upgrades.
  • In this match-up, only the X5 offers standard heated front seats, four twelve-volt power outlets, and speed-sensitive volume control.
  • Heated front seats are optional in the X3, and only two power outlets come standard. Speed-sensitive volume control is not available at all.

BMW X3 vs. X5: Interior Space

Of course, not even the most splendidly-equipped BMW SUV models can satisfy the whole family unless they offer enough space for everyone to feel comfortable! Neither the X3 nor the X5 will leave your passengers feeling cramped, but the mid-size X5 definitely provides more space for cargo:

  • With all seats upright, the X3 provides 28.7 cubic feet of cargo space. The X5 provides 33.9 cubic feet with all seats upright.
  • Fold the seats flat, and you’ll enjoy up to 62.7 cubic feet in the X3, or up to 72.3 cubic feet in the X5.

X3 vs. X5 Seating Capacity: While both models offer seating for five as standard, only the X5 can be optioned with a third row. You’ll still be able to fold down the seats to make more room for cargo, but you can travel with up to seven in a pinch.

BMW X3 vs. X5: Performance

Ultimately, any driver who takes the time to compare BMW models is going to be interested in performance. Although both models can satisfy those who’ve always wanted to own The Ultimate Driving Machine®, the X5 has a more potent engine lineup:

  • With the X3, you’ll choose between a 248-hp 2.0-liter I4 and a 335-hp 3.0L M Performance I-6. These deliver 258 lb-ft and 382 lb-ft of torque, respectively.
  • With the X5, the standard offering is a 335-hp 3.0L I-6 that puts out 330 lb-ft of torque. You’ll have the option to upgrade with a 456-hp 4.4L V8 or a 523-hp 4.4L M Performance V8, providing 479 lb-ft and 553 lb-ft of torque, respectively.

The difference between the X3 and X5 is perhaps most visible when we look at their towing capacities. While the X3 can tow up to 4,400 pounds, the X5 towing capacity reaches up to 7,200.
